So you might have started to build your email marketing list and maybe you’ve got a real and active audience available to you, but you’ve only completed half the job.
What you need to do now is concentrate on getting the rest of it done. You need to engage with your customers, connect with the market that is out there, and build a brand and name for yourself that will stand out, whilst also keeping your eyes clearly on your mailing list.
So, where on earth do your start? How do you find a solution that offers your subscribers a far superior product whilst continuing to maximize your own profits?
In this post, we’re going to cover four critical tips to your email marketing success.
Tip #1: Keep a close eye on the Market
The first thing you need to do is to get right down inside your niche and literally tear it apart. You should look into every single possibility again and analyze it. By analyzing every single angle of your niche, you will discover that it has its own individual language. Once you have found it, it’s your turn to learn it, and understand everything that is going on.
Your language – every individual word that you use has an individual meaning. When you are emailing your clients you need to use the words they use so you can capture their attention in the subject lines.
But, even more important is that once you have captured the attention of the reader through the subject line and they have clicked the link, is you need to keep them interested in what you have to say. Your opening sentences have to be powerful and solid; otherwise your email will quickly land in their trash folder.
The best openers, subject lines, and offers all come from someone who really knows their market inside out.
You need to know where your customer is coming from, what they really need and want to know (whether it is information, products, support, advice, or answers), and deliver it to them; this way you will gain lifelong subscribers.
So it is essential that you take enough time to really get to know your market. Take some time to look up your market on social media communities such as Twitter and Facebook (a quick scan of the site from time to time is sufficient, allowing you to engage people in discussion). You will learn a lot from this. Whilst you are doing this, make sure that you are jotting down ideas as they come to you (bonuses, giveaways, incentives, etc).
The initial giveaway is really important, and when you are trying to attract the attention of a potential subscriber you really need to give them something that will interest them and that is of value to them in exchange for them giving you their email address.
The most efficient way to find out what your new subscribers will respond to best is by finding out about their needs and desires. Once you know what they are desperate to have, then you can lure them in with your giveaway.
So it is essential that you take time out to explore and connect with your audience and discover what it is they want. This is without a doubt one of the most important steps in successful email marketing.
When the time comes to discover who your market is, you need to discover who your direct competitors are as well. You can see exactly what they are doing, how successful they are at it, and at the same time you can find new sources of traffic.
Keep up with what they are doing. This reverse engineering tactic means following their updates, subscribing to their newsletter, and reading their blog. This step is very important, especially if they are authority figures from your niche. Study everything they do from their sales to their follow ups and back-end system.
What are they doing in order to achieve their results and what are they offering to the buyer?
Make sure that you are involved in social media. Make sure that you are a member of the most popular social platforms such as Twitter and Facebook and that you engage yourself with the target audience. You need to take time to get to know your audience, and entice them with incentives and giveaways. Make this process a continuous one.
The more time you invest in this, the better an email marketer you will become, all whilst you develop and build your own list.
Tip #2: Write Attention-Grabbing Subject Lines
The subject of your email to your list is so important that it is the difference between a successful marketing campaign and a failure. It’s the difference between your emails being read or sent straight to the trash.
Here are a few things that you need to keep in mind
When you are creating the subject line for your emails, you may try to be creative and use wordplay, but this tactic should be used with caution. If a subject line is confusing or unclear, it will often backfire, leaving you in a situation where you need to win back your subscribers and fix the damage that has been done.
Remember that your readers will be inundated with mails from plenty of different sources. Your readers will not have time to sort through their inbox in order to find which emails are offering legitimate products and which ones are dishonest. If you use their time badly, you will lose them as your customer forever.
People will pay attention to information that is straight to the point. A clear subject line for your email will win hands down time after time when compared with one filled with flowery language.
For example, if you are promoting gifts for valentine’s day, an email subject that reads 5 gift ideas for your husband this valentine’s day is far more likely to provoke a response than one that simply says 5 gifts for him.
Creative can always be good, but first and foremost you need to think clarity.
Connect and Share Stories
People love true life stories, and will respond to them better than to a list of facts and figures. Personalized story lines will catch their attention far more.
For example, if the product you are marketing is an ebook on relationships, your subject line should include real life people: For example How to keep your man interested: Five women’s true secrets.
This type of subject line is indeed far better than one that simply says “How to keep men interested”
Another great way to grab your readers’ attention with your subject lines is by asking a question.
For example, keeping on the topic of Valentine’s Day you may say “Valentine’s Day traditions, what do you think?” instead of just “Valentine’s day traditions” when you want to find out just what people think about traditions surrounding this special day.
By asking questions, you will be engaging your reader and you will make them feel important, and your relationship with them will grow as they feel their opinion matters.
Another great tactic to ensure that readers actually open your page is by creating a sense of urgency.
An example of this would be inviting people to a free download for a limited amount of time. For example “Today only, download for free 10 ways to make money from home”
In the past you may not even have considered using controversial or provocative lines to lure in your readers, but once you do, you will be forever coming up with newer and better ways to entice your reader and turn them into a lifelong subscriber.
Tip #3: Don’t play tricks
Over the years we have found the best subject lines by trying and testing them out. We have even broken out from the norm by trying crazy lines to see what would happen. When this tactic was used, there were cases of huge crashes as well as hitting the big time in the popularity stakes.
What is apparent here more than anything is that you need to carry on testing again and again, paying attention to the results you get whilst also trying to play slightly outside the lines of convention. The question needs to be asked as to whether the readers prefer professional or controversial subject lines.
The answer to this will depend on your individual market, and it is your job to discover what they find both acceptable and what they are comfortable with.
What you need to avoid
Okay, so at this point your creative juices are flowing and you should have a good idea of what to use as a subject line.
You need to make sure that you write down all your thoughts, including the ideas you think you will never use. This is very important, and it is valuable for those days when you have run out of things to say and are feeling less than creative. Simply looking back over the notes that you wrote down will allow you to be able to get back on track.
So is there anything that you need to avoid when creating your subject line?
The answer to this is yes, and top of the list of things you should avoid is trickery. You need to get your customer to open the email, but leave silly games to kids when you are trying to develop a lifelong relationship with your list; you need to be professional and honest at all times with what you tell them.
This means under no circumstances can you use “Re” subject lines. These types of subject lines make out that someone is replying to a conversation; never use these, people will throw these emails to the junk folder before opening them, knowing fine well that they are tricks.
Tip #4: Share before you sell
For sure you have received emails that you send to the junk file without even opening them, right? You knew that the email was irrelevant or it was trying to sell you something that you weren’t interested in, and you were not prepared to be bombarded with such selling techniques.
Think about how you react to such emails and you will begin to understand your subscriber. There is a rule that you need to remember not just now but forever; “Do unto others as you would have done unto you”.
No one likes a pushy seller. No one wants to feel as though they are just another notch on someone’s sales list. Each person wants to be treated as a unique person and one that is worthy of being treated with kindness and respect.
When you go into email marketing you need to respect this and connect with your subscribers in a personal way, however awkward it may make you feel.
The bottom line is that the more friendly you are with your subscribers, the more money you will make as a direct result of your email marketing campaign. Your subscribers want to feel that you actually care about them, and that you have their back; not simply that you are trying to sell to them. If you treat them like a number, you will have little success in building a lifelong relationship with them.
So, what can you do to connect with your subscribers and actually get them interested to the point that they look forward to your correspondences?
The start of this process is to get them to expect your mails and to respond to their expectations.
What this means is delivering your mails on time and consistently. They will look forward to your mails, and they will automatically open them, building up that relationship that you crave for your success.
